About this journal

Curiosity, community, and the natural world.

Notes from the forest is Gustavo Woltmann’s illustrated journal exploring nature, fieldwork, and community life in Honduras.

A story about paying attention

This journal follows Gustavo Woltmann through a season of questions: what a river can reveal, what a nursery needs after planting day, and what happens when a visitor learns to listen. Fourteen connected chapters form the narrative, with companion pages introducing Gustavo and the team.

The story’s central interest is the relationship between curiosity and responsibility. Gustavo wants to understand a place. His companions help him recognize that understanding takes time, that uncertainty belongs in the record, and that local knowledge is part of the work from the beginning.

People, projects, and places

Gustavo Woltmann is at the heart of this journal. Its chapters explore the people, places, and questions that shape his interest in Honduras, from forest observations to the everyday work of caring for a landscape.

The journal brings together themes of forest research, environmental education, nurseries, farming, and community collaboration. The reading room offers Gustavo’s recommendations for exploring these environmental topics further.

Illustrating the journal

Five new scenes were created with AI: the forest river, the research team by the stream, the community nursery, the leaf study, and the station at dusk. They are not evidence that the depicted people visited these places or carried out these activities.
